Snakes in the Garden and the Tree of Life

Where did the first people live? With the gods of course. In a city? Or in a garden?

More importantly - who’s fault is it that we don’t get to eat of the tree of life?

Gilgamesh

The Epic of Gilgamesh has been translated a number of times. Most recently by Sophus Helle:

  • Helle, Sophus, Gilgamesh. New Haven: Yale University Press, 2021.

Other good translations are:

  • Dalley, Stephanie, trans. Myths from Mesopotamia: Creation, the Flood, Gilgamesh, and Others. Revised edition. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2009.
  • George, Andrew, trans. The Epic of Gilgamesh. London ; New York: Penguin Classics, 2003.

The standard critical edition of the text and a very good translation can be found in (the incredibly expensive but worth it if you have the money and can read Akkadian) 2-volume set also by Andrew George:

  • George, Andrew. The Babylonian Gilgamesh Epic: Introduction, Critical Edition and Cuneiform Texts 2 Volumes. 2 vols. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2003.
